The neighborhood of Pennellville is 4 miles from downtown Brunswick and is registered as an Historic District with the National Register. There are seven Pennell houses still standing, of which the Jaocb Pennell cape is the original (1794). It holds the distinguished #9 spot on Brunswick's list of 100 most historic buildings, and is the highest ranked private residence.
The Pennell family was prominent for their shipyard which operated from 1793-1874 and produced some 90 barks and schooners. Jacob Pennell was the father of seven sons who started the shipyard.
The land was all cleared during the time of the shipyard and the lumber used in the ships, over time the forests have regrown but there are still remnants of the past, the ways which were used for launching the ships are still visible at low tide, and there is evidence of former pastures and fences.
The neighborhood is rural, safe and home to many young families as well as retired professionals. There is a 5-acre minimum lot size and many properties are larger than that. Nearby is public land containing a 4-mile long footpath that runs from Bowdoin College to the ocean on Middle Bay.
It is a beautiful neighborhood - very open, historic, scenic, co-operative, and conservation minded.
